EMPLOYER COVERAGEWashington, DC, DC

Set the scope before the title

Write down the matters, client groups, reporting line, budget authority, work location and first-year outcomes. This becomes the standard for evaluating candidates.

Separate requirements from preferences

List jurisdictional admission, years of practice, practice-area experience, language skills, software, industry experience and travel needs separately. That lets the hiring team decide where it can be flexible.

Make the interview process usable

Name the interviewers, the evidence each person evaluates, the candidate communications owner and the person who can approve an offer. A lengthy process with unclear decision rights loses otherwise qualified applicants.

Use official sources for verification

For credential research and court resources, use the District of Columbia Courts. This site does not determine admission status, good standing or eligibility to practice.

The hiring brief, in one page

A brief that answers these eight items is enough for a search to start; one that answers fewer is a conversation, not a brief.

  • The work: matters, clients or business units, authority, the first-year outcomes.
  • The role level: associate, counsel, senior counsel, general counsel, paralegal, legal assistant, legal operations.
  • The office and model: Washington, DC address or Arlington, Bethesda or another location, days onsite, travel.
  • Essentials versus preferences: admission, years, practice, industry, systems, languages.
  • Compensation: the approved range, bonus and billable structure, exception path.
  • The panel: who interviews, what each person evaluates, who approves the offer.
  • The process: rounds, dates held, decision timeline, feedback standard.
  • Verification: who confirms admission and standing, and through which authority.

Who signs off, and when

The brief is approved by the person who will supervise the hire and the person who approves the compensation, before sourcing starts. Interview feedback is owned by each interviewer and returned inside 48 hours. The offer is approved by the compensation approver against the scorecard, not against a single interview. Verification is owned by one named person. A search with unassigned owners is the one that runs long.

From brief to shortlist with BEGHR

On the discovery call BEGHR confirms the brief, the range and the panel, then sources employed candidates directly and screens them against the brief. A shortlist of 3 to 5 screened candidates arrives with written fit summaries; the recruiter coordinates interviews and candidate communication; the employer interviews, selects and employs the hire directly. Published figures: placements in 23 to 35 days, an 86% fill rate on active searches, a fee roughly 50% less than contingency recruiters, a 45-day replacement guarantee and 50% off a repeat hire for the same role.

Employer questions

Questions Washington, DC employers ask before engaging a legal recruiter.

What is the minimum we need before contacting BEGHR?

The work the hire will own, the office and model, the role level and an idea of the compensation range. The discovery call completes the rest of the brief; sourcing does not start until the brief and the fee are agreed in writing.

Who should own the brief inside the firm?

The person who will supervise the hire. The compensation approver signs the range; the recruiter works from the approved brief and re-calibrates at the weekly review if it changes.

How detailed should the essentials list be?

Four or five essentials, each tied to work the role cannot be done without. Everything else is a preference. Long essentials lists rule out candidates who could do the job.

What if the panel cannot agree on the brief?

Do not start sourcing. A brief that changes after outreach starts costs more days than a week spent settling it, and candidates notice when the role moves.

Does the brief need the compensation range?

Yes, at least an approved range and the bonus structure. BEGHR states the range to candidates before interviews so no one reaches the offer stage with a mismatch.
